Le grandi croci rurali che un tempo ornavano tutta Europa - anche la nostra bella Italia - venivano benedette con un rituale molto antico. Esse erano molto importanti perché sotto di esse si allestivano altari portatili quando il villaggio o il luogo non aveva una chiesa. Inoltre, la gente spesso lasciava le offerte per la Chiesa proprio sotto la Croce. Il sito True Western Orthodoxy ci ha consegnato la formula di benedizione della Croce esterna.

RITO DELLA BENEDIZIONE DELLA CROCE ESTERNA
Il vescovo arriva in processione preceduto dal clero, il quale si pone in semicerchio dinnanzi alla croce. Il vescovo esclama:
V. Il nostro soccorso è il Nome del Signore.
R. Colui che fece Cielo e Terra.
V. Benedetto sia il Nome del Signore.
R. Ora e sempre nei secoli.
V. Giunta a te la mia preghiera.
R. Alle tue orecchie giunga il mio grido.
V. (verso il popolo) Il Signore sia con voi.
R. E col tuo spirito. Rivolto alla Croce, il vescovo:
V. Preghiamo. Signore Dio Onnipotente, noi ti supplichiamo, sii generoso con noi e + benedici quest'immagine del legno della Tua Croce preziosa, che hai dato al mondo come rimedio per la disgrazia del genere umano, come arma contro il peccato. Coloro che guarderanno o passeranno sotto questa Croce possano vivere una vita onorabile, siano guidati al porto della tua volontà, abbiano sempre con loro pensieri buoni e la redenzione delle loro anime, sia questa Croce sigillo del tuo Nome e protezione da ogni avversario. Per Cristo Gesù tuo Figlio e nostro Signore, che vive e regna con Te e con lo Spirito Santo quale unico Dio, ora e sempre, nei secoli dei secoli.
R. Amen.
Segue il canto del salmo 66, durante il quale tutti si recano a baciare la Croce, e vi si prostrano innanzi. A conclusione del salmo, il vescovo esclama:
