Midday Meditation: For Lent, 1966
by Madeleine L’Engle
It is my Lent to break my Lent,
To eat when I would fast,
To know when slender strength is spent,
Take shelter from the blast
When I would run with wind and rain,
To sleep when I would watch.
It is my Lent to smile at pain
But not ignore its touch.
It is my Lent to listen well
When I would be alone,
To talk when I would rather dwell
In silence, turn from none
Who call on me, to try to see
That what is truly meant
Is not my choice. If Christ’s I’d be
It’s thus I’ll keep my Lent.

Is not my choice. If Christ’s I’d be
È così che manterrò la mia Quaresima.
How might you, too, be invited to “break” your Lent, this year? How would that open you differently to the world around you, to God, to your own experience? Pause for a few moments and consider how “breaking” your particular Lent might be the invitation for you (or not) these last ten days or so of Lent. How might it lead you into love, rather than self-righteousness; rest, rather than striving? How might it remind you of your own humanness, and the humanness of the ones around you, to let go of the letting go?
Come potrebbe condurti all'amore, piuttosto che all'autocritica; al riposo, piuttosto che all'impegno?
